Visa Types

AYUSA will support you in determining, which visa is necessary or most appropriate for you. Here is a short overview of the different options, organized by countries of citizenship:

EU member countries:
  • Au pairs from EU member countries do not need a visa to be an au pair in Germany
All countries outside the EU (except Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and USA):
  • Au pairs have to apply for the Au Pair Visa at the German embassy in their home country. The embassy will collect the application materials, visa fee and conduct an oral German exam. Afterwards all materials will be submitted to Germany, where they will be approved by the local immigration offices. The entire process can take between 8-12 weeks.
USA:
  • Citizens of the USA can travel to Germany without a visa. They can apply for the Au Pair Visa with a local immigration office in the city of the host family´s residence. here. Au pairs have to prove a basic level of German language skills (oral German exam) and submit the written application materials.
Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand:
  • Citizens from these countries can apply for a Working Holiday Visa at the German embassy in their home country. The application proccess is generally faster and less complicated. Also, participants can be up to 30 years old. Alternatively, they could also travel to Germany without a visa and apply for the Au Pair Visa (see USA).

Program Extension

  • Optional AuPairCare program extension for au pairs who originally committed to 6 month (maximum length 12 months)
